A. Lange & Söhne’s sports timepiece goes where few luxury watches dare

From suits that can take you from the office to the bar, to cars that match your profession and haul the family on weekend trips, today’s lifestyle demands versatility more than ever.

German watchmaker A. Lange & Söhne have long been renowned for their fine mechanical timepieces that are common sights at cocktail parties or special occasions. At this year’s Watches and Wonders 2020 showcase though, the maison debuted one of their sportiest timepieces without compromising on its signature elegance.

The ODYSSEUS model is now available in a striking white gold case paired to either an integrated rubber strap with inner air ducts for comfort or a hand-stitched leather strap. All the finer details fans would expect from an A. Lange & Söhne are there including a large-format date and day display on a grey dial with a multi-layered surface for a very textured effect. Water resistance meanwhile is rated at a very impressive 120 metres, a design element which makes obvious that the ODYSSEUS is intended for active people who wish to wear their Lange watch even in situations when a precision mechanical model would ordinarily be set aside.

Inside the 40.5mm white gold case resides a L155.1 DATOMATIC manufacture calibre developed exclusively for the ODYSSEUS and crafted entirely by hand. The movement’s functions include hours, minutes, a subsidiary seconds dial with stop seconds, and a day and date window flanking the 9 o’clock and 3 o’clock indexes. A small ‘60’ on the inner flange ring is set in red for a very subtle colour accent to the grey and white gold.

Other luxurious appointments include white-gold hands and notched baton appliques to ensure optimum legibility against the darker dial. The hands and hour markers are also luminous to ensure low-light use.

A final design highlight worth mentioning is the transition between the case and the lugs, which sees the unique intersection between brushed surfaces and polished chamfers. The sapphire crystal caseback meanwhile shows off the lavish movement inside.
