In the fast lane: McLaren reveals its purest race car in modern history

Crafted by the finest minds and assembled by hand with precise execution, the spirit of the opulent McLaren Longtails has been brought to life rivalling exquisite machines like the Ferrari 488 Pista.

With the marque’s iconic narrative of crafting polished race cars that glide as elegantly as a figure skater on ice, it will come as little surprise the newest addition to the legendary line sets an all-time high.

Sleek curves, a nimble physique and effortless weight create the fourth McLaren Longtail in more than two decades which has been tailored as one of the purest race cars in history.

Allowing for a dainty imprint of 1,247 kilograms but not deriving from the aesthetic luxury, the sports car has been moulded from lightweight carbon-fibre monocoque chassis making it 96 kilograms lighter than the McLaren 570S Coupe.

The extensively designed lightweight body forces the supercar’s 3.8 litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine to effortlessly rocket from 0 to 96.5km/h in three seconds.

Touted as being the perfect track toy with a top speed of 333km/h, the new McLaren packs a punch leaving you gasping for air when your foot melds with the pedal offering sharper braking systems and quicker steering.

Inspired by its salient predecessor, McLaren F1 GTR 1990s Longtail, this exclusive race car pushes boundaries with a focus on track dynamics – featuring a longer body, new front spitter, side sills, extended diffuser and fixed rear wing allowing for lower weight and greater downforce.

Engaging the hallmarks of the opulent badge does not subtract from the increased power, enhanced drive engagement or track-focused dynamics, McLaren Automotive chief executive officer Mike Flewitt explained.

"The McLaren F1 GTR Longtail that began the lineage was one of the purest race cars in modern motorsport history," says Flewitt.

"The 675LT resurrected the revered name, creating the purest distillation of the sheer driving pleasure embodied by all McLaren cars.

"Now we are further extending our very special Longtail family – albeit in limited numbers – and once again showcasing the ethos of optimised aerodynamics."

To harness the ambition to excite, the exhausts are mounted behind the driver’s shoulders to completely replicate the thrilling sound and atmosphere of a powertrain that floods the cabin.

Previously, 500 models of the 675LT Spider sold out within two weeks provoking thoughts history may repeat itself when the newest Longtails begin production in October 2018.
