Aston Martin celebrates history and looks to the future with the DBS Superleggera

Two celebrated names return with Aston Martin’s new DBS Superleggera. Paying tribute to the construction methods of the Italian coachbuilder Carrozzeria Touring, the Superleggera nameplate shares pride of place on the Super GT’s bonnet alongside the iconic DBS that made its first appearance in 1967.

Replacing the Vanquish S as Aston Martin’s Super GT flagship, the DBS Superleggera has a top speed of 211mph, achieving 0-100mph in a mere 6.4 seconds.

Seductive curves and generous proportions meet cutting-edge aerodynamics and an athleticism that sees the Super GT defy the wind and embrace the road. Sculpted carbon fibre body panels lend the DBS Superleggera a muscular appearance, one paired with the impressive performance born out of its 5.2-litre twin-turbo V12.

Power and torque abound, giving rise to an unparalleled in-gear performance, and the engine’s placement towards the back of the chassis ensures an optimum weight distribution and centre of gravity. A striking sound character arrives courtesy of detailed tuning and a new exhaust strategy making use of quad tail pipes and active valves.

A new double diffuser taking inspiration from F1 designs combines with contemporary aerodynamic concepts, including the Aeroblade and the curlicue, to allow the DBS Superleggera to produce 180 kilograms of downforce at VMAX – a notable increase achieved with no additional drag penalty.

A rear-mounted ZF eight-speed automatic transmission delivers power and torque to the rear wheels, and predictable handling is ensured by torque vectoring and a mechanical limited-slip differential. Fiery in-gear acceleration is achieved thanks to a lower final drive.

The intensity of DBS Superleggera’s response can be increased or relaxed, depending on the driver’s mood, with a choice of three dynamic modes for the powertrain and chassis.

Dr Andy Palmer, Aston Martin President and CEO, celebrates the Super GT. "DBS Superleggera signals our return to the very pinnacle of the Super GT sector. Handsome beyond measure, its lightweight carbon composite and aluminium body is sculpted into a shape with tremendous presence and charisma. Immaculately styled, obsessively engineered and outrageously potent, the new DBS Superleggera is every inch the Aston Martin flagship."

Forged double wishbones ornament the front of the lightweight, bonded aluminium chassis, with a multi-link system at the rear. Sensors detect driving conditions and adaptive damping is fitted as standard.

In addition to an impressive array of equipment that comes as standard, drivers are given the opportunity to put their own creative mark on the Super GT.

A range of designer specifications are on offer, with the Aston Martin Design Team having developed colour and trim combinations chosen to emphasise certain aspects of the DBS Superleggera’s character. A choice of two 21-inch alloy wheel designs, both fitted with Pirelli tyres designed exclusively for the vehicle, rounds out the look.

The DBS Superleggera starts at US$304,995, and deliveries are anticipated to begin in Quarter 3, 2018.
