A beautiful mind: Chang Ju-Shan

In Taiwan’s booming cosmetic surgery industry, Airlee Biomedical and Cosmetic Polyclinic CEO Chang Ju-Shan explains the importance of understanding inner and outer beauty.

Rather than relying on paid advertisements to generate business, Airlee Biomedical and Cosmetic Polyclinic (ABCP) measures success based on the happiness and confidence of its customers. "My definition of beauty comes from Peter 3:3-4," explains CEO Chang Ju-Shan. "He says, ‘Your beauty should not come from outward adornments, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewellery or fine clothes.

Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight.’"

As the largest cosmetic clinic in Taiwan, ABCP comprises more than 50 direct and franchise locations throughout China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore. Operating within one of the most competitive cosmetic industries in the world, Airlee is constantly re-evaluating its offering to stay ahead of its regional and South Korean counterparts.

Renowned for its advanced technology and personalised customer service, Airlee has earned international ISO 9001 certification, which is Taiwan’s highest aesthetic medicine service award.

It holds a top spot amongst Taiwan’s best cosmetic surgery clinics and was the first group in Asia to be certified by the American Association of Aesthetic Medicine and Surgery.

In 2013, ABCP took its global exposure to the next level when it entered the larger Chinese market, opening a 2,000-square-metre clinic in Guangzhou. While its Taiwanese competitors are competing on price, cutting budgets and searching for a niche in the market, Airlee Biomedical Group has continued to expand and has become a pioneer in its industry.

"‘Walk in as a middle-aged woman, walk out as a beautiful young lady’ is the industry’s most promising expression right now. However, we not only want to make our customers feel beautiful and young, but also more confident. In my role as CEO, I have discovered that helping and serving others is the foundation of happiness," says Chang.

"Taiwan’s aesthetic medical technology is world class, attracting a huge number of international visitors who want to experience the miracle for themselves. Not only has Taiwan’s aesthetic medical technology matured, but the industry has also expanded towards medical check-ups."

To meet this demand, in 2018 Airlee International Medical Group invested US$50 million to launch Ruei Fo Health Management Hospital in the Neihu District, and its first high-end, customised medical check-up service. "This 8,250-square-metre facility set a new milestone for Taiwan’s high-end healthcare industry, competing with renowned international healthcare institutions.

"High-end medical check-ups are popular among the Chinese, especially in its wealthy population – some of whom are listed on the Forbes Rich List. Privacy is a high priority for this demographic, and that’s exactly what Taiwan’s premium medical institutions offer," Chang explains.

"High-profile guests are picked up by a limousine as soon as they get off their private jets – the entire procedure is highly confidential."

Ruei Fo Health Management Hospital also launched a customised medical check-up system catering specifically to women. "Not only do women receive the benefits from industry-leading technology, but they also enjoy one-of-a-kind, thoughtful customer service.

We provide customers with an individual health guideline according to their age and lifestyle, and all appointments are booked to ensure no patient spends hours in the waiting room," Chang points out. "We guarantee comfort, efficiency and most importantly, accuracy."

As a forerunner of aesthetic medicine and treatments in Taiwan, ABCP is constantly searching for the most advanced medical technologies and treatments for its patients, in line with those in the US and Europe.

In 2018, the business held its first summit with 20 of its Taiwanese counterparts to create a united front, establish common value, and help shape ABCP’s five-year strategy.

Over the next 20 years, the Airlee Group will work towards the domain of preventive medicine and mental health. "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. One’s appearance is formed through their thoughts," Chang explains.

"The body is a physical form of the mind, so I believe that a healthy body starts with a healthy mind."

ABCP has an extensive network of sincere and highly trained plastic surgeons, dermatologists, and medical professionals, and Chang is focused on developing a strong talent pipeline into the future. "Skills and professionalism are vital elements of any business.

To earn the trust of our customers, our clinics are comfortable spaces offering personalised service – because our customers deserve the best," Chang notes. "It’s these thoughtful services that make all the difference."
