Built to bridge: Joe Henein

Sixteen years ago, Joe Henein wasn’t stepping into a neatly defined CEO role. Instead, he was building something that didn’t yet exist the way he envisioned it.

"I started NewBridge Pharmaceuticals," he tells The CEO Magazine. "I am the operational founder of the company."

Fresh from senior leadership roles across the United States, Europe and the Middle East, including assuming roles of VP and Global Commercial Chair for Anti-Infectives at Wyeth Global Headquarters, and later as Head and Managing Director of Wyeth’s Middle East and North Africa affiliate in Dubai, Henein recognized a growing gap in global healthcare.

While innovation was accelerating rapidly, access to those innovations was not, particularly in emerging markets and specifically, the Middle East and North Africa region.

Breakthrough therapies were emerging from small and mid-size biotech companies, but many lacked the know-how, the appetite or a defined pathway to reach patients in the Middle East and North Africa.

"Historically, large companies would enter the region through broad multi-market partnerships," he explains. "But that model simply wasn’t feasible for small and mid-size companies, often lacking the resources to support such a large geography."

It was upon this realization that his solution came into full view. He’d create a regional platform: a single, trusted bridge between Western innovation and Eastern access.

"We were bridging innovation from West to East and bridging the access gap locally to become a one-stop solution, hence the name NewBridge," says Henein, who led this vision and journey as the President and CEO since inception.

Seeing the gap

That early ambition soon became the foundation for the business. Today, NewBridge Pharmaceuticals is headquartered in Dubai and operates across the Middle East and North Africa region, partnering with global pharma and biotech companies to commercialize therapies approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration and European Medicines Agency, addressing serious unmet medical needs.

"The opportunity proved out – and 25 partners have signed with us since inception," Henein says. "We’ve been able to really disrupt the status quo. And I’m happy to say because of that opportunity we saw 16 years ago, we are now at the top of the pyramid of this business model."

Rather than acting as a mere distributor or contractor, NewBridge Pharmaceuticals positioned itself as an extension of its partners’ operations in MENA – establishing regional strategies, building brands, creating awareness and education, supporting patients, navigating complexities, managing access and scaling across diverse markets.

"We are not in generics, distribution or contract services," he points out. "Our focus is singular: providing a one-stop solution for biopharma companies developing innovative therapies that want to reach the 400 million people in the Middle East, but cannot do so on their own."

Henein acknowledges that the company could have chosen the easy path.

"We could have made a quick buck on dermaceuticals or consumer products, but we knew we couldn’t win unless we were in the area that we know best, and the area we know best is specialty pharma, addressing high unmet medical needs," he says.

For NewBridge Pharmaceuticals, that involved heavy investment into expertise, compliance and long-term capabilities rather than faster-margin priorities. Henein explains it also meant committing to the full complexity of the region and the model itself.

"From the outset, we made the decision to operate across the entire region, from Morocco to Iraq," he recalls. "We pioneered scaling in a way not seen before – today we are 330 strong and all our functions were built in-house."

Scaling with purpose

Growth at NewBridge Pharmaceuticals has been driven by the growth of its portfolio and integrating businesses of existing partners. Its portfolio spans oncology and hematology, immunology, liver disease, metabolic and rare diseases and a significant neuroscience franchise, covering neurology, neurodegenerative and neuropsychiatric conditions.

"These are products that are genuinely addressing serious unmet medical needs in the markets, which have a serious impact on patients’ lives and their caregivers, as well as a high disease burden on governments," Henein confirms.

He says organic growth remains the priority, with long-term contracts signed with blue-chip partners and blockbuster brands. But expansion could also be geographical.

"We are looking into some pockets of Africa as the second stage and we’ve also created an affiliate network in Europe," he reveals.

The objective is to build regional capability by introducing cutting-edge global innovations to the Middle East. Driving this growth is a strong sense of purpose, which Henein believes shapes the company’s culture.

"When you work with innovative medicines that truly change patients’ lives, it ignites a deeper sense of passion," he reveals.

"Commercial and financial success remain important, of course, but knowing that you are delivering on a much greater purpose makes all the difference. It is that sense of fulfillment and responsibility that drives us to keep pushing forward, bringing more innovation to patients who might otherwise never have access to these medicines."

It’s a purpose that has translated into uncommonly long tenures.

"We have teams that have stayed 10 and 15 years with the company. They’ve never left – they love the mission and enjoy their contribution to it," he adds.

Technology and trust

Investing in technologies and automating our systems and processes is critical in reducing inefficiencies and increasing productivity.

"Inwardly, we’re looking at AI-aided support in supply, finance, dashboards and intelligence," Henein says.

However, he believes the more transformative opportunity lies at the population level, particularly in rare disease.

"Our region has a very high rate of rare diseases due to genetic dispositions and, all too often, these patients get lost in the system. It takes years to diagnose them," he notes.

Working with governments in key markets in the region, NewBridge is exploring how AI can help identify patients earlier and connect them to treatment. It’s a model Henein sees as essential to the future of healthcare access.

At the same time, though, he’s candid about the complexities.

There will always be inherent challenges with this model," he admits. "Globally, companies may get acquired, priorities change and clinical outcomes may shift.

"Trade volatility, regional geopolitical dynamics and financial risks all add up to that locally. Between the risks and opportunities, balance and leadership inevitably emerge."

The long game

According to Henein, what ultimately sets NewBridge Pharmaceuticals apart isn’t scale alone. Instead, it’s how its partnerships are built and sustained.

"I see many ingredients of success needed to be there, some are given, but the most differentiating successful path is built on full integrity and transparency. People can immediately sense when you’re genuine," he says.

This is the recipe that has shaped the company's relationships that span more than a decade-and-a-half.

"Several of our partners have been with us since 2012 and continue adding more products to a very successful partnership," Henein notes.

"As the collaboration has grown, many have expanded their portfolios – from initially two products to five, seven or more."

As healthcare systems evolve and global pharma recalibrates its footprint, Henein believes adaptability will define the next era.

"We need to be progressive and resilient in our strategies," he reflects. "Changes are happening right, left and center."

Even though the work is demanding, Henein says he couldn’t picture being anywhere else.

"The job is very heavy on time, but I enjoy what I do – the thought that you can impact the patient’s journey with accessible new innovations to help alleviate their pain and suffering is very fulfilling. I love the purpose."
